RUSS ANDREWS - BOLDBold offers a solid collection of close-up card effects by UK magicianRus Andrews. Many are fast but appropriate for restaurants and bars. Thevideo quality isn't the greatest and audio is uneven, and allperformances are for a magician and not lay crowds so you can't seereactions. Despite these caveats, there's some good material here.Before tackling the material here, you should have a foundation in cardsleight of hand, although the DVD does teach some of the basics, ever sobriefly.In 'Hidden,' a spectator simply thinks of a card andthat folded card is found in his shoe. If you already work with cards,the handling is basically what you are expecting. While it's a greatidea, the explanation is a bit lacking at a key moment.In 'PipMy Ride,' the spectator selects a card, a 'two.'

Later, the magiciansays that he has found the spectator's card, but displays a 'three' ofthe same suit as the spectator's 'two' (for example, a three of diamondsis displayed but the spectator had selected a two of diamonds). Whenthe spectator states this, the magician appears to wipe a pip from thethree card and turns it into the selected two. It's a nice, visualchange.Transpo'Daley Transpo' offers a strongtransposition of two cards. Two red cards are held in the spectator'shands and two black cards are held by the magician. The different hereis that Andrews has added a cool convincer that appears to show that thecards are in the position that spectators think that they are. At theend, the cards switch places.'

Oil Slick' offers a two-phasedoil and water style routine that can be performed with eight ordinarycards: four black and four red. In the first phase, the cards arecounted face down, but in the second phase, the cards are counted faceup (mostly). A plus, this version can be done mostly in the hands. Thisone is good.CollaredThe most touted effect on the DVD is'Collared,' a transposition of two cards with one going to an unusualspot, a spectator's jacket or shirt collar.

Here, a spectator selects acard which is returned and lost in the deck. A joker is placed into thespectator's hand and it changes into his selection. The Joker is laterfound tucked under the spectator's jacket or shirt collar. Andrewsdoesn't talk about collars, so you'll have to learn on your own whichones will adequately hold the cards. This one takes some cunning and abold move, much as 'ashes on the palm' does.This one requiresan interesting switch - something that Andrews calls the 'dump switch.' The move has angle considerations, but is practical for many strollingsituations. I like the move and find that it streamlines the necessarywork for this particular effect.

If a situation doesn't allow for the'dump switch,' you can always resort to a more standard method, althoughit will be less efficient.In all, bold offers a worthwhilecollection of fast effects that are appropriate for restaurant, bars andwalk around situations.
